The skirt that thinks it is a painting.

Translating my personal paintings into wearable art for the first time marks a proud creative milestone, successfully blending the soul of the original canvas with the precision of a silkscreened skirt.

This season we are doing something I have never done before. The Vase skirts are part of our Firecracker Collection for Chinese New Year, but they sit just as beautifully within Christmas. They are timeless wrap skirts, graceful in movement and full of colour. And yes, for the first time ever, I put my paintings directly onto a skirt.

A vase with flowers is technically not a pattern, but to balance the composition there are several patterns flowing around it, giving the skirt the full Nala universe you know and love.

The paintings began exactly one year ago. Each vase holds flowers with meaning. The chrysanthemum for long life and devotion, the dandelion for resilient women, the yellow saraka for joy, the heaven lotus for purity, the magnolia for quiet strength, and more still waiting in my studio. They began simply as paintings, but one year later they have found their place.

Instead of photographing the artworks, we translated them into layered illustrations so the colours could be separated, chosen and silkscreened. It means the skirt carries the soul of a painting and the precision of a print. A long process, an experiment, and something I am genuinely proud of. You will see a picture of me with the originals.

The production is very limited and each skirt carries its own quiet story. And for those who love the paintings but prefer not to wear them, we created a small number of limited edition prints, available in all our stores.

ちょうど一年前。

私たちはテストの気持ちで、シンガポールのBoutique Singapore（クリエイターたちが腕試しをする大型ポップアップのようなもの）に出店しました。

それは挑戦であり、未来を試す一歩でもありました。そして──準備に準備を重ねた今、ついに。シンガポール・Tanglin Mall にNala Designs の常設店が誕生しました。

その知らせを受けた瞬間、スタッフの顔に自然と笑みがこぼれました。

「ついに、国境を越えたんだ」と。

国境は“近い”のに、“遠い”。

マレーシアとシンガポールは、地図では隣同士。けれどブランドにとっての「国境」は、想像以上に高く、そして重い。シンガポールはアジア随一の洗練された都市。

世界の名だたるブランドが並び、感度の高い消費者がその価値を見極めます。

そんな場所に、マレーシア発のローカルブランドが常設店を構える──

それは、「ローカル」から「アジアのブランド」へ。**大きな飛躍の証です。

“本物”かどうかを決めるのは、国境を越えられるか。

手描きの柄。大胆なのに上品な色使い。そしてLisetteが作り続ける、あの独自の世界観。

それらが文化も言葉も越えて“通じる”ということ。それはつまり、Nala Designsの美しさは、本物である。**そう認められた瞬間でもありました。

多民族国家のシンガポールで支持されるということは、デザインに「普遍性」があるという何よりの証です。

日本へ向かう、小さな種

Lisetteはよく言います。

「いつか、日本にも店を持ちたい」と。

うなぎのエピソードから始まった日本とのつながり。こけしのまなざし。日本の風景、人、文化から受け取ってきたインスピレーション。その“小さな種”は、今アジアに根を広げながら、ゆっくりと未来へ向かっています。シンガポールでの成功は、

Nala Designsが世界で愛されるブランドへと育っていく確かな一歩。

そして同時に、“日本での夢”への階段をまた一段上った瞬間でもあります。

マレーシアから、シンガポールへ。

そして、いつか日本へ。

私たち日本人スタッフは、

この物語の次の章が日本で開かれる日を、

心から楽しみにしています。

日本人なら誰もが知る、あのアイテム。

けれど、その裏にNala Designsとの“必然の出会い”があったことは、あまり知られていません。

今回は、その奇跡のような物語を少しだけご紹介します。

2015年11月に日本で販売が始まり、2020年のレジ袋有料化をきっかけに、

瞬く間に“エコバッグ界の女王”と呼ばれるようになったバッグをご存じでしょうか。

そう、「Shupatto（シュパット）」です。

記憶に新しい方も多いかもしれませんが、

今では日本人コミュニティでもすっかりおなじみの存在になりました。

Nala Designsとのコラボレーションから、もうすぐ1年。

その“運命的な出会い”は、Lisetteと妹たちの**Isabella**、**Fleur**が日本を訪れた冬の日のこと。

「バックパックだけで旅をしよう」──Fleurのその一言から、3人は本当にリュックひとつで旅に出ました。

なるべく荷物を軽くしたいと思っていたとき、彼女たちが出会ったのが**Shupatto**。

ワンタッチで折りたためる天才的な機能美と、洗練されたデザインに、Lisetteは瞬時に心を奪われたといいます。

実はこの“折りたたむ”という発想の原点には、日本らしい物語があります。

Shupattoを生み出した日本のデザイナーは、

新人研修で配られた**紙製の帽子**から着想を得たそうです。

その帽子は、両端を引っ張ると一瞬で棒状に戻る仕組みになっていて、

昼休みには「誰が一番きれいに畳めるか」を競って遊んでいたとか。

その記憶がヒントとなり、布で試作を重ねて誕生したのがShupattoでした。

“シンプルであることは、美しい”──

そんな日本のデザイン哲学と、Nala Designsのカラフルな世界観が、

自然に溶け合った瞬間でした。

Shupattoとのコラボレーションに向けて奮闘し、

担当の**マナミさん**との出会いを経て、7か月後。

ついに夢が形になりました。

この出会いは、偶然ではなく──必然。

そして今もなお、Nala Designsのものづくりの根底には、

この日本での出会いが静かに息づいています。

これからも、“日本とNalaのつながり”から生まれるストーリーを、

心を込めてお届けしていきたいと思います。

Shupatto in Store

The long awaited Shupatto bags are finally arriving at our stores. As for the pre-orders, all online orders will be shipped in the week of the ninth and tenth of December, but you can already see and feel the real thing in every nala store from the sixth of December.

Shupatto is known worldwide for its award winning design, a clever foldable system that opens in one smooth pull and folds neatly in seconds. We are very proud to bring this iconic piece into the Nala universe.

For this launch, we are introducing three Shupatto bags in two sizes. Two medium bags in the fifteen liter size, perfect for daily errands and gifting, and one large twenty seven liter version for work, travel or serious shopping. All three are collector favourites and always sell out quickly.

To make this collaboration even more meaningful, each bag features one of our classic prints.
Georgia, inspired by the rhythm and architecture of New York.
Breadfruit, one of our earliest and most recognisable designs.
Willow Wishes, the very first print ever drawn in the Nala universe.

The bags arrive storewide on the sixth of December in Malaysia and Singapore, and they will also be available online. Come early, see them in person, and choose your favourite before they are gone.

Classical Concert at Nala

Kantoor After Dark begins this Saturday, 13 December 2025, with our first chamber concert inside Nala Kantoor, our creative office on the third floor of 33 Jalan Hang Kasturi. It is a night where classical music, design and community meet in one intimate setting.

For this debut edition we welcome the COARTLA Quartet from the Coartify Collective. Alyssa Chong, Samuel Wong, Christopher Oh and Timmy Lim will perform selections from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker, a beautiful and familiar sound that sets the perfect tone for the season.

The concert runs from 8.30pm to 9.30pm, and we invite everyone to arrive fifteen to thirty minutes earlier to order a coffee from Ghostbird downstairs, a simple ritual that completes the night. You can also enjoy late night shopping before or after the performance, as Kasturi will remain open.

Parking is easy, with ample space at Central Market and Daya Bumi, both just a short walk away. We will also be handing out Nala vouchers to make the evening even more special.

We have one hundred seats only, and registration is required through the QR code or online. Come dressed in something festive and bring someone you love.
